ELKINS, W.Va. (May 12, 2025) – Michael J. Hurst, DPM, a podiatric surgeon at Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center, recently performed the first surgery in West Virginia to implant a custom 3D-printed navicular bone. The procedure, completed in partnership with Restore3d, used advanced 3D printing technology to create a patient-specific implant to relieve pain and restore movement in the foot.
The navicular bone, located in the middle of the foot, is essential for walking and balance. In this case, the original bone was damaged by a loss of blood supply.
“This is a big step forward for patient care in our region,” Dr. Hurst said. “Restore3d’s custom, 3D-printed implant allowed us to match the patient’s unique anatomy. Using detailed scans of the patient’s foot, we were able to design a bone replacement that fit precisely. These implants can restore natural function and structure more precisely than traditional methods, improving outcomes and reducing recovery time.”
