McHenry, MD – Five students recently completed the Family Development Credential (FDC) Program offered through Garrett College’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) division and Garrett County Community Action Committee, Inc.

The FDC Program provides frontline workers with the knowledge and skills needed to coach families to set and reach their own goals for healthy self-reliance in their communities. To earn the credential, a worker must complete 90 hours of interactive classroom instruction, prepare a skills portfolio with support of a portfolio advisor, and pass a state credentialing exam.

Terra Alta resident Bevian Hensley said the course gave her “a new perspective on working with families.”

Oakland resident Regina Green, meanwhile, commended Instructor Katie Harding for the way she made the course “fun and interesting.”

“I would recommend this class to anyone working with families,” Green said.

“I really enjoyed the cultural competence chapter,” said Jennifer Cosner. “This course has given me the courage to be able to talk to the people around me.”

Oakland residents DeAnna Chapman and Lisa Friend also completed the program. Green, Hensley, Friend, and Chapman all work with Garrett County Community Action Committee. Cosner is a Head Start parent.

The next FDC program will start in February 2026. For additional information, please contact Dr. Kimberly Govi at 301.387.3084, or kimberly.govi@garrettcollege.edu.
