Moorefield, W.Va. — Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College is marking the 20th anniversary of the statewide Board of Governor’s (BOG) degree. The BOG degree program is designed to fit the needs of adult students – particularly those who already have work and family commitments – by offering credit for life and work experience, option for compressed courses, and ability to take online courses.
“The BOG program at Eastern is a great option for any adult who may have some college credit and work experience and is looking to weave those together in getting their associate’s degree,” said Monica Wilson, VP of Academics and Student Services. “We understand that everyone’s path to a degree is different, and the BOG program is one that has been adapted to the needs of adult learners.”
The West Virginia BOG degree program was created in 2005, and in the last five years, more than 2,300 BOG degrees have been issued in West Virginia. According to a recent National Student Clearinghouse report, in 2024 there were 179,965 West Virginians under the age of 65 who had some college but no credential. The BOG program provides a flexible way for adult learners to cross the finish line on their degree.
“This remarkable program quietly plays a vital role in West Virginia’s higher education landscape,” said Dr. Chris Rasmussen, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. “Many adults in our state begin their careers and don’t realize that finishing a college degree is still within their grasp. The BOG program helps bridge that gap by valuing professional experience and offering a path that fits busy lives.”
The only prerequisite for the BOG degree is to have a GED or equivalent and be out of high school for at least two years. Many adult learners pursuing an BOG degree have financial aid options. For more information on financial aid at Eastern, call or contact Ed at edward.cole@easternwv.edu.
