PARSONS – Ice accumulations of up to 1/4 of an inch left several roads closed temporarily Saturday morning. Barry Gardner, Highway Administrator for Tucker County DOH, said there were three roads closed for a short time because of hazardous road conditions.
Gardner said WV32 toward Canaan Valley, US219 toward Thomas and WV93 toward Mt. Storm were closed early Saturday morning due to icy roads.
“We had to use some extra salt and extra personnel,” Gardner said. “We lucked out because the temperatures warmed up quickly.”
Gardner said Thomas was hit hardest by the frigid conditions, and said he did not hear of any accidents caused by the slick road conditions.
John Sikora, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, confirmed the 1/4 inch of ice accumulation on Saturday morning, and said Tucker County residents will feel more of the cold and snow this week.
“There is a system crossing the area Monday evening that will generate about 3 to 5 inches of snow by Tuesday morning. Tuesday’s commute will be dicey,” Sikora said Monday morning.
“After this system passes, snow showers will linger in the area through Thursday. Folks should brace for a blast of cold on Wednesday and Thursday, where wind chills will drop to minus 10 to minus 20 degrees.”
