HAMBLETON – The Mt. Lions took the floor at TCHS on Tuesday January 13th against long time rival Southern, MD. Tucker County held off the Rams in the fourth to get the 58-56 win.
The fans came out to see two good teams and the fans were not disappointed as both teams battled in the first quarter as Tucker County led 15-13 after one. In the second quarter Southern and Tucker County played even as both teams scored 17 points in the period to make the score 32-30 Mt. Lions at the half. Tucker County outscored the Rams 15-9 in the third quarter to take an 8 point lead into the fourth 47-39. Southern would fight back in the final quarter as they outpaced the Mt. Lions 17-11. The three point attempt for the Rams fell short as the final horn sounded and Tucker County escaped with a 58-56 win.
Derek Zirk led Tucker County with 19 points, 10 rebounds and Seth Evans finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds. Mikhail Lewis added 10 points, Ethan Crosten had 9 points and Landon Dillard dished out 6 assists for the Mt. Lions. The Mt. Lions JV team got the win over Southern 62-51.
HAMBLETON – Tucker County hosted Tygarts Valley on Thursday January 15th for a PVC conference game. The Mt. Lions led from start to finish to capture the 78-33 win at home.
Tucker County scored 15 points in the first quarter and held the Bulldogs to 6 points to lead after one 15-6. The defense for Tucker County held the visitors to just 4 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 33-10 advantage at the half. In the third quarter the Mt. Lions dominated again as they led after three 50-20. The Tucker County reserve players then hit 6 three point baskets in the fourth quarter to blow the game wide open as Tucker County would get the win 78-33.
Seth Evans led Tucker County with 22 points, 10 rebounds and Derek Zirk finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds. Andrew Hauser added 9 points for the Mt. Lions and Owen Evans collected 9 boards in the win. The Tucker County JV team also won 63-29.
HAMBLETON – The Mt. Lions faced “AAA” Preston on Friday January 16th at home. Preston outscored Tucker County 20-5 in the third quarter and the Mt. Lions could not complete the comeback as they fell 68-53.
The gym was packed and the crowd was loud as both teams battled in the first quarter. Preston had the 13-9 lead after one. Tucker County fought back in the second quarter as they outscored the Knights 20-15 to take a slim lead at the half 29-28. The third quarter belonged to Preston as Tucker County struggled on offense and the visiting Knights outpaced the Mt. Lions 20-5 in the third to make the score 48-34 after three. The Mt. Lions fought back in the fourth, but Tucker County was not able to complete the comeback as Preston got the victory 68-53.
Marcus Mason led Tucker County with 17 points and Ethan Crosten added 14 points, 6 steals. Derek Zirk finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds for the Mt. Lions in the loss. The Mt. Lions JV team got the win over Preston 68-43.
