Lars Byrne to Present at the Darden Mill on the History of the Elkins Railyard, Then and Now

Elkins, West Virginia — Lars Byrne is set to present on the history of the Elkins railyard on July 16th at the historic Darden Mill. Byrne has dedicated more than twenty-five years to preserving and promoting West Virginia’s railroad heritage and will present on the development of the Elkins Railyard through the years, with emphasis on the early beginnings and the later years of the mid 20th century.

Currently serving as the Senior Dispatcher for the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, Byrne’s railroad career spans multiple historic rail operations, including the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, West Virginia Central Railroad, Cass Scenic Railroad, and Shenandoah Valley Railroad.

Byrne began his railroad career in 1999 as a volunteer excursion train host and commentator. He joined the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad as a part-time employee in 2000 and became a full-time employee in 2007. Throughout his career, he has earned certification as both an engineer and conductor.

Among his many railroad accomplishments, Byrne served as conductor of the Mountain Explorer Dinner Train for 12 years and as a Polar Express conductor for seven years. He is also recognized as the unofficial historian of the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad and is a frequent speaker for the railroad’s public programs, sharing his extensive knowledge of West Virginia railroad history with visitors and enthusiasts.

Previously, Byrne has served as an adjunct instructor for the WVU Fire Service Extension and as a Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) presenter. His commitment to public service includes many years with the Philippi Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief, as well as service as Director of the Barbour County Office of Emergency Services.

This presentation is free to all and will take place on July 16th at the Darden Mill at 101 Railroad Avenue in Elkins. Doors will open at 6:00 and the presentation will begin at 6:30 PM.
