Tucker Valley’s ReadAloud program is gaining momentum. ReadAloud Chairperson, Tracy Harlan, reports, “Through our ReadAloud program we have been able to provide students in grades K-4 a book each week.
Tucker Valley elementary Middle School principal, Belinda Moss, and students, Kennede Helmick, and Blake Helmick, with a generous donation of books.
Tucker Valley elementary Middle School principal, Belinda Moss, and students, Kennede Helmick, and Blake Helmick, with a generous donation of books.

Our goal is to expand the students “at home” library and offer reading materials for parents to read with their children. Each week we distribute over 273 books to our students. We maintain the program through generous donations from the community, local thrift stores, and parent donations. At the beginning of the program we had 2 community members help get us started with a $400.00 donation and several boxes of “Little Golden Books” for our primary grades. In addition, in the past 2 months, ReadAloud has received a $50.00 grant for books, 2 faculty donations totaling $150.00, and a ReadAloud donation of over 400 books!” We would like to offer our sincerest “Thanks” to every parent, community member, volunteer, staff member, and business that has helped assist us to bringing literacy changes to our community. We could not do this without you.”

Our program is changing the lives of children who do not have access to reading materials at home. They are now able to make a choice of the book they read and have appropriate materials to do book reports with and read for pleasure. We hope to continue this type of program next year and add additional supporters and businesses as part of our local chapter. There are several ways you can help: Become a literacy volunteer, donate gently used books to our drop boxes at the doors of TVEMS, gather up free books from yard sales or libraries, ask friends and family for their old books they’ve finished reading, or make a small donation to the ReadAloud program. Most of all we ask you to, “Read with a child”; make it part of their daily routine and support literacy in Tucker County. Contact Tracy Harlan @ luv2teach16us@yahoo.com or Volunteer Coordinator- Kay Moss, or any ReadAloud Volunteer for additional Information about this program.
