CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In the wake of recent flooding and severe weather that has impacted communities throughout the Mountain State, the West Virginia Department of Health (DH) is reinforcing its commitment to ensuring all families have access to essential nutrition. The Department is reminding participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) that specialized food package adjustments are available for those facing challenges with food preparation or storage.
“Recovery is about rebuilding homes and restoring what was lost, but it’s also about caring for the people and families who are working to put their lives back together,” shared Secretary of Health Dr. Arvin Singh. “Making sure WIC families have better access to food means one less thing they have to carry during an already difficult time. We hope, in addition to nourishment, this provides comfort and stability when people need it most.”
The “Limited Cooking Facilities” package is designed to support WIC participants living in situations where access to water, reliable cooking equipment, refrigeration, or adequate storage is compromised. This adjustment is available in all 55 West Virginia counties, ensuring that help is accessible regardless of location.
To better serve those in temporary or emergency housing, this modified package includes nutritious items that require minimal preparation. Allowable substitutions within this package may include shelf-stable options such as evaporated milk, nonfat dry milk, baked beans, and pre-prepared items like hard-boiled eggs.
Participants whose ability to store or prepare food has changed due to the recent emergencies are encouraged to contact their local WIC clinic to see if the Limited Cooking Facilities package is the right choice for their household.
As communities continue their recovery efforts, the DH also advises participants to check with their local approved retailers. While the state is working closely with vendors, some grocery stores may have adjusted hours or have limited inventory. Local clinics can provide further guidance on where WIC benefits are currently being accepted.
