The Tucker County Commission approved a $1,400 funding request by the Tucker County 4-H Teen Leaders. The funding request was for housing on an upcoming trip to Gettysburg. The request was approved unanimously by the board during the Commission’s Sept. 9 meeting.
“On this trip, we will explore Gettysburg learning about the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War,” the group’s presentation said. “By exploring the battlefields and historical sites in person, we can better understanding of the experiences of the soldiers and civilians who lived through this important period of American history.”
The teens said that they have enough funding for food and other travel costs, but have come up short when it came to the cost of lodging for the trip. They requested a total of $1,400 from the Commissioners for their lodging costs while in the Gettysburg area.
During the Teens’ presentation, the group informed the Commissioners about this year’s projects and fundraisers, including a visit to Harpers Ferry and a volunteer project at the Parsons Depot, as well as a Spaghetti Dinner organized for a resident in need in the community.
The group said they not only volunteered their time and labor at the Depot, but paid for the materials, as well. The group sealed the wooden deck at the entrance to the building. Afterwards, they were taken inside the Depot and given a historical lesson of the history of the building, its contents and the area.
“I heard that the Teen Leaders saw a real need in somebody that had been facing some difficulty with health,” Tucker County Commission President Mike Rosenau said.
In response to the perceived need in the community, the Teen Leaders arranged a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for the resident.
The group’s funding request was unanimously approved. The Commissioners requested that the group return following their trip to report on what they learned while in Gettysburg.
