Mother Nature took over this past week showing everyone how much control she has on our everyday lives. School in Tucker County was canceled everyday last week which in turn canceled all scheduled basketball games for the entire week.
The #3 Tucker County Girls’ Basketball(16-2) team had 2 games canceled this week, a home game against Philip-Barbour and a road game at Pocahontas County. The previous week the Lady Mt. Lions had 2 home games canceled against Petersburg and Charleston Catholic. The timing of these cancelations could not have come at a worse time in the season. The Tucker County Girls’ could not make up any of the four games because their regular season ended and the postseason sectionals start this week. Sectional play for the Lady Mt. Lions will tip off tonight at Elkins High School at 6pm against Tygarts Valley. If Tucker County wins they will play the winner of Notre Dame – Union on Friday at Elkins High School at 7pm. The winner of Friday’s game will then host a Regional Final next Thursday March 5th for a chance to advance to the State Tournament March 11th-14th.
The #9 Tucker County Boys’ Basketball(14-4) team also had some cancelations from this past week’s winter weather. The Mt. Lions were scheduled to travel to Pendleton County on Feb 13th, then travel to Moorefield on Feb 18th and host Notre Dame on Friday Feb 20th. All of those games were canceled due to school closure. The good news for the Mt. Lions is they will make up 2 of the 3 games this week. The Pendleton County game will be made up with a home game against Harman on Monday February 23rd and the Notre Dame home game is scheduled for Saturday Feb 28th. The Tucker County Boys’ will also play their regular scheduled home game against Petersburg on Tuesday February 24th. This game will be Senior Night for the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams. All games will start with a JV game at 5:45pm followed by the Varsity contest. The TCHS Boys’ will start Sectional play on Wednesday March 4th at Elkins High School with the winner advancing to the Sectional Final on Friday March 6th. The winner of the Sectional Final will host a Regional Final game on Thursday March 12th. The loser of the Sectional Final will travel to face the Section 2 final winner on their home floor. Winners of the Regional Finals will advance to the State Tournament in Charleston on March 18th-21st.
This cold winter weather also put a damper on the Lady Mt. Lions JV team as they were scheduled to play 3 games and none of those games will be made up thus ending their season. The Tucker County Girls’ JV team only played 8 games before last week and would have only played 11 games total. The reason for the low number of games was the teams on Tucker County’s schedule did not have enough players to field JV teams. This resulted in not having a JV game to play before the Varsity contest. The JV team finished their season with a 7-1 record and won 7 straight games after dropping their first game of the season. Members of the Lady Mt. Lions JV team are as follows: Leslie Nestor, Jenna White, Abbey Eye, Jenna Walker, Lindsey Johnson, Sydney Moore, Emily Crosten, Dominique Meadows, Cecily Strawderman, Mikala Betler, Olivia Smallwood and Allison Zirk.
