Tucker Co Boys win first sectional game, but drop sectional final

ELKINS – The Mt. Lions opened Sectional play on Wednesday March 4th at Elkins High School against Harman in the second game of the evening. Tucker County came out firing on all cylinders and never looked back in route to a 97-49 victory in the Sectional Semi-Final.

In the first quarter Tucker County outscored the Panthers 25-5 to take control of the game. The Mt. Lions added another 25 points in the second quarter while holding Harman to just 9 points which gave Tucker County a commanding 50-14 halftime lead.

Harman could not slow down the Tucker County offense as the Mt. Lions scored 27 points in the third that pushed the Tucker County lead to 77-25 after three. The reserve players for the Mt. Lions finished the game in the fourth and Tucker County took home the 97-49 win.

Seth Evans led the Mt. Lions with 19 points, 7 rebounds and Landon Dillard had 14 points, 4 assists. Derek Zirk finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds and Owen Evans added 10 points, 2 blocks. Mikhail Lewis dished out 7 assists in the game for Tucker County and the Mt. Lions ended the game shooting 62% from the field.

 

ELKINS – Tucker County faced off against Notre Dame on Saturday March 7th for the Sectional Championship. The Irish built a lead in the second quarter and held off a rally from the Mt. Lions to get the victory over Tucker County 54-48.

The Mt. Lions exploded out of the gate in the first quarter as they outscored Notre Dame for a 17-9 lead after one. The Irish fought back in the second quarter as Notre Dame’s Jarod West scored 13 points in the quarter to outpaced Tucker County 24-6 in the second and Notre Dame led at the half 33-23.

Both teams played even in the third quarter to score 8 point each and the Irish continued to lead after three 41-31. Tucker County chipped away at the Notre Dame lead in the fourth quarter, but the Mt. Lions could not complete the comeback. Notre Dame took home the Sectional Plague for the second straight year with a 54-48 win.

Derek Zirk led the Mt. Lions with 23 points, 13 rebounds and Seth Evans added 8 points, 6 rebounds. Landon Dillard also dished out 5 assists in the loss for Tucker County.

The Mt. Lions(17-6) will now travel to Moorefield on Thursday March 12th for a Regional Final game with the winner advancing to the State Tournament in Charleston next week. Game time will be 7pm with radio coverage on 94.7FM WELK. For more info or news go to TuckerCountySports.Com.
