HAMBLETON – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team played host to the Pendleton County Wildcats on the afternoon of Saturday March 7th. Winter weather pushed the game back to Saturday from its original scheduled Thursday date. The Lady Mt. Lions took care of business at home to earn their 11th straight trip to the State Tournament in Charleston with a 64-44 win.
Tucker County opened the game with 23 first quarter points and held the visiting Lady Wildcats to 7 points to take the early lead after one 23-7. The second quarter was controlled by Tucker County 16-12 to push the home team’s lead to 39-19 at the half.
The Lady Mt. Lions added to the lead in the third as they outscored Pendleton County 16-6 in the quarter to lead 55-25 after three quarters. The reserve players finished out the game in the fourth quarter and Tucker County picked up the Regional Championship win 64-44.
Senior Aiyana Kachmarek led Tucker County with 14 points, 7 rebounds and Sydney Nestor finished with 13 points, 5 steals. Madison Mullenax added 9 points, 5 rebounds and Elizabeth Nichols chipped in with 7 points, 5 steals in the win for Tucker County.
Tucker County(19-2) landed a #3 seed in the State Tournament and will face #6 St. Marys in the Quarter-Final game today at 9:30am. The winner of this game will face the #2 Wheeling Central / #7 Fayetteville on Friday March 13 at 9:30am. The Class “A” Championship game will be played on Saturday March 14th at 12 noon. The Class “A” State Tournament seeding is as follows: #1 Huntington St. Joe, #2 Wheeling Central Catholic, #3 Tucker County, #4 Pocahontas County, #5 Charleston Catholic, #6 St. Marys, #7 Fayetteville and #8 Tug Valley.
