Elkins, WV – To help people make the commitment to walk daily, Davis Health System is again sponsoring the ‘100 Miles in 100 Days’ program which officially steps off Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day, 2015.
Walking is one of the best ways to maintain healthy weight, build muscle and feel great—physically and mentally. In fact, studies show that walking can burn calories, strengthen muscles, help prevent osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes and colon cancer and improve overall mood and attitude.
Program registration runs through May 24, which is also the first day to begin logging miles. The last day to log miles is Monday, September 7, and the deadline to turn in miles (and receive the free t-shirt) is Friday, Sept. 11.
100 Miles in 100 Days is a self-directed walking program that puts participants in charge: they decide what time of day to walk and where to walk. It is also acceptable to substitute running, biking, hiking, swimming, and aerobics for walking. (Twenty minutes of other exercise equals one mile.)
Convenient registration and information is available online at www.dhs100miles.com. Printed packets are located at the Gorman Avenue Lobby (new) of Davis Medical Center, at Broaddus Hospital (Kathy Wilson), and at the Tucker County Health Department (James Snyder).
Participants must commit to walk at least one mile (approximately 20 minutes) each day. Those new to physical activity should check with a doctor to make sure it is safe to begin walking as a regular daily activity.
Participants may register as a solo participant or as a team of up to 12. Those who successfully complete 100 miles of activity during the program will be awarded the 2015 t-shirt after Labor Day.
