William Harold Sheets, age 95 years, a well-known former postal carrier of Tucker County and a resident of Parsons, WV, departed this life Sunday afternoon October 4, 2015 at Granville Manor at Parsons, WV, surrounded by his family and under the care of Hospice Care.
He was born Monday, February 16, 1920 at Parsons, WV, a son of the late Raymond Oral and Maude Mitchell Sheets. He was twice married. First to the former Mildred Fansler, who preceded him in death May 10, 1964 and second to the former Virginia Raines, who survives at Granville Manor at Parsons.
Surviving are one daughter, Susan Elaine Currey and husband Randy of Rivesville, WV; one step – daughter, Marsha Raines Lipscomb and husband Richard “Dick” of Greensboro, NC; one step – son, Robert Keith Raines of Redding, CA; one daughter-in-law, Gean Sheets of Greenwood, SC; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by one son, Stephen Larry Sheets; one step – daughter, Sandra Jean Barr; three brothers, Ronald Sheets, Russell Frederick Sheets and Cecil R. Sheets; and two sisters, Opal Marie Belen and infant sister, Mildred.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1938, where he was Valedictorian of his class. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII in the European Theatre. He was an employee of the service station in Parsons, the former Woolen Mill, he worked the projector for the former Victoria Theater at Parsons; he was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service from 1949 until 1972. He attended the Automatic Pin Setter Machine School in Ohio and worked for several local Bowling Alleys. He was an avid Bowler with several League teams and State Tournaments. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church for many years. Mr. Sheets enjoyed cross word puzzles was a quiet and gentle man.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. The Reverend Phil Dent officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, The Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War, and The Tucker County Veterans Association conducted full military rites.
