Mary Lee Lambert, 101, of Oakland passed away on Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home. Born on December 3, 1913, on a farm in Lead Mine, WV, she was the youngest child of the late Samuel and Laura (Helmick) Hile. Mary graduated from Thomas High School in Thomas, WV, and then attended Potomac State College and Shepherd College. She graduated from Davis and Elkins College with a degree in Elementary Education and began her teaching career in one-room schools in Tucker County, WV, before becoming a first-grade teacher for most of her 27 year teaching career in Hambleton and Parsons, WV. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s sorority, she was past president of the Tucker County Teachers’ Association. Mary was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Women’s Civic Club in Parsons, WV, and in Oakland, MD. In addition, she was an active member of the Loar Auxiliary of Garrett County Memorial Hospital and enjoyed serving as an usher for GLAF concerts. In her retirement, Mary was an avid golfer and loved to go to the Mary Browning Senior Center each Wednesday. When she moved to Oakland in 1986, she became a devoted member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the Ruth Circle of the United Methodist Women and the Catholic Daughters. Mary is survived by her daughter Willetta Wythe Mateer and husband Paul R. Mateer Jr., of Oakland and Frostproof, FL; a son, Herbert Stanley Lambert, Jr. and wife Joan of Oakland; five grandchildren, Rev. Paul Richard Mateer and wife Leslie of Canvas, WV, Pastor Mark Mateer and wife Julia of Bradenton, FL, Mary Beth Callis of Oakland, Herbert Stanley Lambert, III, M.D. and wife Kassandra (Bell) of Oakland, Christopher John Lambert, J.D. and wife Tracy (Teagarden) of Ormond Beach, FL. ; thirteen great-grandchildren: Bethanie Mateer, Sarah Martin and husband Christian, Daniel Mateer, Joseph Mateer and wife Shawna, Phillip Mateer, Caroline Mateer, Elizabeth Irvin and husband Ian, Aaron Callis, Anna Callis, Joshua Lambert, Zachary Lambert, Jackson Lambert and Sophia Lambert, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Stanley Lambert, Sr.; two sisters, Ora Ellis and Edna Keiper; three brothers, Albert Hile, Russell Hile and Cecil Hile; a half-brother John Hile; a half- sister, Cora Helmick, a great granddaughter Angel Rose Lambert and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank St. Paul’s United Methodist Church for their prayers and love. A special thanks to Dr. Goralski and the caregivers of Dennett Road Manor for their kindness and compassion shown to Mary over the years. Friends were received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St, Oakland on Monday, October 19, 2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 318 East Oak St, Oakland, MD with Rev. Paul Richard Mateer and Pastor Matthew Paugh officiating. Interment was in the Parsons Cemetery, Parsons, WV.
