Because we can’t go on any trips this year, I will be putting some websites here in our column for those who have a computer. I’m trying to get you in a Christmas mood. These are on YouTube. For any of you that have been to Lancaster, PA, the American Music Theater (hopefully we will be going there in May) has done an 8 episode “Home for Christmas” series on YouTube.com. Enjoy! Also on YouTube.com: “Hallelujah” Chorus from Handel’s Messiah-Mormon Tabernacle Choir; “Radio City Christmas Spectacular—November 8, 2014; “Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Christmas Canon; and finally “The Best Christmas Song I’ve Heard. It Will Give You Chills.” I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
The song’s gifts are hidden meanings to the teachings of faith. The “true love” refers to God Himself. The “me” who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The other symbols mean the following:
2 Turtle Doves= The Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens= Faith, Hope, and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds= the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings= the first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch”, which gives the history of man’s fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying= the six days of creation
7 Swans A-swimming= the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments
8 Maids A-milking=the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing= the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping= the Ten Commandments
11 Pipers Piping= the eleven faithful apostles
12 Drummers Drumming= the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by one man, Robert L. May, who was a copywriter for the Montgomery Ward company and was asked I 1939 to write a story for a children’s book that would be given away to customers. May used the story of The Ugly Duckling for inspiration to create the classic. A decade later after millions of copies had been distributed, May’s brother-in-law put the story to music and the misfit reindeer’s legendary status was sealed.
The Tucker County Senior Centers will be closed on Friday, December 25th and Friday, January 1st. We will reopen the following Monday. Enjoy your holidays safely.
