Free Friday
Free Friday will be held at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on November 24, at 6 p.m. A meal consisting of assorted casseroles, salad, bread, desserts and drinks will be served. Everyone is welcome, no donations are accepted.
Upcoming evens at D&E
- Theater Auditions Auditions for the Davis & Elkins College Division of Creative Arts spring theatre production of “Hedda Gabler” will be conducted from 6:30-9 p.m. November 27-30 in the Creative Commons area (formerly Pit Dance Studio) of Myles Center for the Arts. Roles for eight to 16 actors, as well as musicians, are open. Musicians should bring their own instruments to the audition. The play, which contains adult content, will be presented April 12-15 on the D&E campus. - Book Presentation Davis & Elkins College Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Philosophy Dr. Bryan Wagoner will give a presentation on his newest book, “Prophetic Interruptions: Critical Theory, Emancipation, and Religion in Paul Tillich, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, 1929-1944,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, December 4 in Halliehurst on the College campus. In the work Wagoner compares the early religious socialist work of German-American philosopher and theologian Paul Tillich with the early Critical Theory of the so-called Frankfurt School. The event is free and open to the community, and Wagoner will have copies available for purchase. A reception will follow. The book was published by Mercer University Press and released on November 1.
- Christmas Concert The Davis & Elkins College Concert Choir and Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church will present the annual gift of music to the community with “Lessons and Carols” at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 7 at the church. The event, which is free and open to the public, shares the themes of light, hope and the birth of Christ through lyrics, hymns and readings. Davis & Elkins College Benfield-Vick Chaplin the Rev. Laura Brekke will deliver the Christmas message “Hope Interferes with Dinner.” The choir will present “Mary Did You Know” by Lowery, Green and Hayden Sheldon Curry, “There is Faint Music” by Dan Forest and “Baroque Christmas Festival” by Audrey Snyder, among other selections. A reception will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. The evening’s offering will go toward local food pantries.

Winter ID Class
The Tucker County Extension Office will be hosting a free Winter Tree ID Class at the Parsons Senior Center on Thursday, November 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Dr. Dave McGill, Forest Resources Extension Specialist, with be the instructor. This indoor seminar will give participants hands-on experience in identifying trees by bark, twig, and bud attributes. RSVP to the Extension at 304-478-2949 ext:209.
