Tucker Community Foundation recently announced plans to establish the Tucker County Economic and Community Development Fund (aka TED Fund) and offered to match donations $1 for $1 up to $5,000; a challenge that was quickly met when local business owners, Matt and Angie Shockley, stepped up with a donation and a pledge.
The Shockleys are enthusiastic about the opportunity to invest in a community about which they are passionate. Their generous donation is helping the Foundation build a permanent source of funding for activities related to job creation, job retention, and general improvements to the business climate in the county.
The Shockleys are deeply entrenched in the Tucker County business community. They spent the past several years building small businesses in Canaan Valley including Q&A Associates, The Breakfast Nook, Deerfield Restaurant and Pub, and Double S Stables slated to open this fall on Cortland Road in Canaan Valley. Matt is General Manager of Canaan Cable, a company he helped his father build.
Angie grew up in neighboring Randolph County and has always considered Tucker County her playground, enjoying a myriad of outdoor and athletic opportunities. After more than 10 years of traveling for her career, she began building small businesses and in 2010 opened Q&A Associates which offers three transitional living programs for “failure-to-launch” young adults.
Matt grew up in Spartanburg, SC and moved to Canaan Valley in 1987 where, in addition to his work with Canaan Cable, he worked in the ski industry and enjoyed careers in real estate, general contracting, and utility line work. Shockley credits Canaan Valley with saving his life, stating it “provided him a safe place to grow through the struggles of young adulthood with wonderful mentors who offered advice and guidance when I needed it most”. In addition to managing several businesses, he also serves as a volunteer fireman with the Canaan Valley Fire Department.
Matt and Angie support their belief in giving back to the community stating, “When we learned of the Tucker County Economic & Community Development (TED) Fund, we realized this is a tremendous opportunity to make an investment in the community we both love so much. The TED Fund will support efforts to create more jobs, maintain current jobs and assist in the general economic development of Tucker County, which is exactly how we choose to spend our time and resources. We both appreciate participating in the continued growth of the area through the efforts of the Tucker Community Foundation”.
Donations from the general public increase the impact of the TED Fund. To donate, mail checks to TCF – TED Fund, PO Box 491, Parsons, WV 26287.
