DAVIS, W.Va., June 18, 2019 – The nation’s birthday is right around the corner and Canaan Valley Resort has the perfect alternative to the usual July 4th rendezvous. Some of the best holiday weekends are spent receding from the crowds, exploring remote environments and escaping to some of the iconic scenery and locales that make this nation truly one-of-a-kind.

The scenic chairlift takes visitors to the top of the ski hill.

Festivities will kick off Thursday, July 4 with resort-organized wagon rides throughout the day and a marshmallow roast in the evening. Friday, July 5 will feature the always-popular Bald Knob Hike with a scenic chairlift ride followed by the moderately strenuous walk. Other activities include arts and crafts,  more wagon rides and a marshmallow roast.

On Saturday, festivities take flight with a kite-building workshop, jumbo- and stunt-kite demonstrations, wagon rides/marshmallow roast and a fireworks display in the nearby town of Thomas.

Highlights of Sunday activities include a morning stream search with experts from the Nature Center, kite-building workshops and jumbo and stunt kite demonstrations. The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra will begin at 3 p.m. at the amphitheater located by the Tube Park area. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs.

“We encourage travelers of all ages to consider selecting this magical place we call home for a truly splendid escape into one of the many laid-back wonders of the nation,” said Steve Drumheller, general manager of the resort.

Kite flying demonstrations will take place over the weekend.

Canaan Valley is the highest valley east of the Mississippi River and is known for its relatively mild summer temperatures and as a destination for escaping the heat that often hits Mid-Atlantic cities this time of the year. Situated in a long, narrow valley with an average elevation of around 3,300 feet and surrounded by mountain peaks rising as high as 4,300 feet above sea level, Canaan Valley temperatures are consistently cooler than nearby cities.

For those who want to stay close by, Canaan Valley Resort offers a variety of lodge rooms and cabins. To reserve accommodations, visit the website or call 1-800-622-4121.
