PARSONS – The hallway at the City of Parsons Business Office is decorated with the many entries for the Christmas Poster Contest, and on Saturday, winners received their cash prizes and certificates before the start of the Parsons Christmas Parade. The theme for the Christmas Poster Contest and the Christmas Parade was “Let Freedom Ring with the Bells of Christmas.”
Winner Macy Helmick, daughter of Dave and Kelly Helmick, is a fifth-grade-student at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School. She said she had fun designing and completing her award winning poster.
“It is a Christmas Tree with presents under it,” Macy said. “There are cookies and milk waiting for Santa. There is also an elf sticking out of it.”
Macy said her poster took two weeks to complete. She said she was excited to hear she had taken first place in the contest.
Macy said this year she is asking Santa Claus for a new vanity.
Second place winner, Tabitha Adams, daughter of John and Lynette Adams, is also a fifth-grade-student at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School.
“My poster had a Christmas Tree made from buttons,” Tabitha said. “I used glitter glue and glitter tape on the sides.”
Tabitha said it took about four days to complete her poster.
“When I found out I won second place, I was very excited,” Tabitha said. “For Christmas I am asking for Project MC2.”
Christmas Poster Contest organizer Tammy Michael said the contest was open to students in first through sixth grade.
“Most of the entries came from Kelly Croston’s fifth-grade class,” Michael said. “Jaden Moore was our third-place winner.”
Michael said the winners also received a cash prize of $25 for first, $15 for second and $10 for third.
The first and second place winners in the Christmas Poster Contest not only received a certificate and a cash prize, but were invited to ride through the Parsons Christmas Parade in a horse-drawn sleigh along with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
