Thomas, WV – Like many families, the Cortland Acres family celebrates summer with their annual resident and family picnic. Held on Saturday, July 13th in the front parking lot of Cortland Acres, the theme selected by members of Cortland’s Resident Council was “4-Wheelin’ – Off The Beaten Path”. Residents of Cortland’s skilled nursing facility, the Blackwater Rehab Center, Pineview Apartments, and The Pines retirement community were all invited to spend the afternoon at the picnic with family and friends.

A huge tent was erected to provide shade during the festivities and various festival-food stations were available prior to lunch served at noon. Entertainment was provided by local musician Dave Senic and accompanied by his daughter Angie Senic Shockley. A jacked-up, 4-wheelin’ 1971 Volkswagen Beetle, affectional known as “The Mud Bug” was provided by Nancy Simpson and Randy Harr gave side-by-side rides in his 2014 Kawasaki Terex throughout the afternoon.

The annual picnic is an all-hands-on-deck affair and requires the coordinated efforts of the Activities staff, their legion of volunteers, as well as staff from all Cortland departments and management. At the end of the day, it’s an event like no other.

If I’m not scheduled to work next years’ picnic I’m coming anyway. What a wonderful day for everyone – residents, their families and those of us that had the privledge to spend the afternoon with them. It was a wonderful, heart-warming afternoon and one that I will not soon forget.”
