ELKINS, WV–On Wednesday, June 6, Davis Medical Center will host a Senior Health event at the Family Practice area of DMC in Elkins.   This free event will provide valuable health screenings, and a better understanding of key issues specific to senior health.

“This is a perfect opportunity for Davis Medical Center to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems among seniors,” said Catherine Chua, DO, FAAFP, FMNM, Davis Health System Chief Medical Officer.

“Some of the major health risks seniors face can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis so it’s very important to get the screenings you need.  Senior Health Day provides a convenient venue for key screenings and education.  We really hope many will take advantage of this special health event,” said Chua.

The event is from 8 a.m. until noon and features the following free health screenings:

  • Body Mass Index (an indicator of obesity and underweight)
  • Diabetic
  • Blood Pressure
  • Blood Glucose
  • Cholesterol
  • Cardiac Risk
  • Incentive Spirometry (pulmonary lung function)
  • Sleep Apnea & CPAP
  • Depression
  • Skin cancer
  • Hearing

In addition, clinic providers will be available to provide Annual Wellness Visits for Medicare Part B beneficiaries.  This comprehensive annual screening is designed to help seniors prevent disease and disability based on current health and risk factors.

Additional DMC professionals will be on hand to offer education and informational resources on health topics such as behavioral health, smoking cessation, Living Wills, nutrition, chronic care management, cardiac health, low dose lung cancer screenings, joint health, mammography, colonoscopy and immunizations.

Guests are encouraged to gather up their prescription and over-the-counter medicines and bring them for a review by Health Center Pharmacy staff.   This “brown bag” activity helps identify and solve medication compliance problems, and checks for duplicate, outdated and poorly stored medicines.

The entire event is free and open to the public.  Better health giveaways, door prizes, and refreshments will be offered.

The Family Practice waiting area is located in the Outpatient Center of Davis Medical Center.  Guests are encouraged to park and use the new entrance along Gorman Avenue.
