Tucker County, WV — The holiday season shone a little brighter this year as the community gathered on Saturday, December 6, for an evening of mystery, laughter and giving. “We Four Kings: A Christmas Whodunit,” a dinner-theater performance sponsored by The Cortland Foundation and co-sponsored by Blackwater Ridge, raised $5,000 to support the Tucker County Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels Program.
Hosted at the National Youth Science Academy, the event featured a festive dinner catered by The Berry Best 304 Catering, with guests raving about the homemade cheesecake. A Silent Auction further boosted support for the program, which provides vital services to local seniors.
The play “We Four Kings,” written by The Skit Guys, offered a comedic and heartfelt twist on the traditional Christmas pageant. The story follows the wise men as their gifts mysteriously vanish, triggering a humorous search for the missing packages. Audience members were invited to vote on “whodunit” just before the final act, leading to a burst of laughter when the true culprit was revealed.
The production was brought to life entirely by volunteer actors and crew sharing their time and talents, with stage and lighting support from Joyful Production. The lively interaction and festive humor made the evening an unforgettable holiday experience.
Crystal Boone, Director of The Cortland Foundation, expressed her gratitude for the community’s involvement: “This event was about more than just raising funds—it was about coming together to celebrate joy and show our support for seniors in need. We’re overwhelmed by the generosity and spirit of the community. Tucker County residents have such big hearts, and we’re proud that The Cortland Foundation could sponsor an event that brings people together for such an important cause.”
Tim Turner, Director of the Tucker County Senior Citizens, highlighted the significance of the fundraiser: “Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal—it’s a lifeline. For many of our seniors, that daily knock at the door is the highlight of their day. This event ensures we can continue providing this vital service and it shows our seniors that their community truly cares. We are deeply thankful to everyone who made this event such a success.”
The Tucker County Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program plays a critical role in supporting seniors across the county. The program delivers an average of 1,240 meals per month to local residents, improving nutrition, promoting independent living and providing essential daily check-ins. Many recipients face challenges such as food insecurity, limited mobility or chronic health issues, making these regular meal deliveries indispensable.
For some seniors, the brief daily visit from a Meals on Wheels driver is their only human contact, underscoring the importance of this service. Funds raised at this event will directly benefit local seniors, ensuring they continue to receive nutritious meals—and the companionship that comes with them.
The success of the evening was made possible by the generosity of many. Special thanks go to the volunteer actors and crew, co-sponsor Blackwater Ridge, Joyful Production for professional stage setup, 304 Berry Best Catering for an excellent meal, the Silent Auction donors and bidders and, most importantly, the community members who attended and supported the cause.
“Every ticket purchased and every bid placed contributes directly to nourishing seniors in our community,” added Boone. “The compassion of Tucker County continues to inspire us.”
