ELKINS, W.VA. – Surveys show that men are less likely than women to go to a physician for routine care and important health screenings.  Davis Medical Center is offering men over the age of 50 an opportunity to learn how to stay on top of health issues and ways to prevent illnesses during the Men’s Health Night. The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center, located at Robert E. Lee Ave. in Elkins.

“Men may not be comfortable talking about their health.  But this can come at a high price if they miss out on getting potentially lifesaving screenings,” said Dr. Catherine M. Chua, DMC Chief Medical Officer.  “This year, we will be offering hearing, PSA, BMI, BP, Diabetic Screening and Total Cholesterol Checks. We will also have members of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute speaking on important topics.”

Health screenings begin at 5 p.m. and include:

– DMC Cardio Pulmonary- Blood pressure assessment, cardiac risk assessment and BMI – body mass index.

– Hearing checks performed by Advanced Hearing Solutions.

– PSA blood screening (prostate specific antigen) which indicates prostate cancer prostatitis or an enlarged prostrate.

– Sleep Apnea Screening and FENO testing.

– Diabetic screening/glucose checks.

– Broaddus Hospital Physical Therapy- “5 exercises to reduce knee pain”

– DMC Population Health- Total Cholesterol Checks

“We purposefully plan the evening to be a relaxed, comfortable environment for guests to learn and ask questions,” event coordinator Chad Ware said.  “Davis Medical Center is the region’s primary healthcare resource and we want to be sure we provide opportunities designed specifically for certain populations, like men.”

“Another draw to the event is the fact there’s no cost.  Free screenings, a great dinner, information and door prizes all at no cost.  You can’t beat that,” Ware added.

Dinner is included in the event and will served at 6 p.m. During the meal, health experts will present talks and answer questions. Speakers include:

  • Dr. Dean Wolz from the West Virginia University Heart and Vascular Institute
  • Dr. David Tingler from the West Virginia University Heart and Vascular Institute

The DMC Men’s Health Night is free and open to the public however, space is limited. An RSVP is required by June 15 by calling Chad Ware at 304-637-3378 or by emailing Warec@davishealthsystem.org.

Door prizes will be drawn at the end of the event.
