The signing of the proclamation for Domestic Violence Awareness month was done on October 14, 2021 at the city hall building. Present was Mayor Dorothy Judy,
Savannah Hull Wilkins Prosecuting Attorney-Tucker County, Susannah Crawford from Randolph/Tucker Children’s Advocacy Center and Kimberly Shaffer Tucker Co Advocacy for Centers Against Violence. Thank you for coming out and supporting the awareness for Domestic Violence.
The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness month (DVAM) used for representation is the color purple as you can notice on our town bridge has been decorated in observes for DVAM. The NCADV (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence defines Domestic Violence as the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of the systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, and emotional abuse. Domestic abuse does not discriminate. It is seen across the board of race, gender, sex, religion and monetary classes.
The WV Coalition Against Domestic Violence released the following data. WV DV related Deaths October 1, 2020 – September 30, 2021 was estimated 38 DV related deaths occurred in WV during that time period. The worst result of DV is the loss of life. The average age of these victims was 46; 20 out of the 38 deaths included a firearm. Out of the 55 counties in WV 19 counties reported DV related deaths; 7 out of the 38 happened in Kanawha county and 5 out of the 38 happened in Preston Co.
