“The Student,” a watercolor by Jeannine Romano of Bridgeport, W.Va., is among the paintings that will be part of the West Virginia Watercolor Society Signature Member exhibition, hosted by Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, Aug. 13 – Oct. 26, 2018. The exhibition is free to the public, and an opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at the college, located at 316 Eastern Drive, Moorefield.

Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College in Moorefield will host an exhibition by Signature Members of the West Virginia Watercolor Society, Aug. 13 – Oct. 26, in the college’s first-floor Eagle’s Nest Gallery. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, and the public is invited to attend.

The exhibition will be open during the college’s regular hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some additional limited evening availability, depending on class schedules.

“Eastern is thrilled to host the West Virginia Watercolor Society exhibition on our campus, and we look forward to welcoming members of the community to view the works of these talented artists,” said Eastern President Chuck Terrell.

“Eastern’s service area in the Potomac Highlands offers WVWS an ideal opportunity to reach residents in Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Pendleton and Tucker counties,” said Kristen Colebank, a WVWS member and recent Eastern graduate who lives in Wardensville. “Many might think watercolors are just paint sets for young children. We want this exhibit to demonstrate professional mastery in watercolor, as well as show that the medium can provide for a broad range of creative expression, including realism, abstraction, and everything in between.”

Signature members of WVWS are among the society’s most accomplished artists, and members earn the status through a series of portfolio reviews, as well as having work accepted in multiple WVWS national juried exhibitions.

Included in the EWVCTC exhibition will be a painting by the late Christine Maxwell of Petersburg. Maxwell, who died in 2012, was an active participant in the Grant County Arts Council and a Signature member of several regional art societies, including WVWS, and over the years she encouraged many Petersburg-area residents to take up painting.

The exhibition will not be professionally judged, but sponsors Capon Valley Bank and Hardy Telecommunications have donated $250 and $150, respectively, for People’s Choice Awards. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to vote for their favorite paintings through Oct. 5, and the People’s Choice winner and runner-up will be announced the following week.

The West Virginia Watercolor Society, a statewide arts organization, was chartered in 1984 and its membership hails from all areas of West Virginia. Learn more about WVWS at www.wvwatercolorsociety.org.
