Foundation Awards Grants

Tucker Community Foundation (TCF) Board of Directors approved fall grant awards totaling $79,400 at their October board meeting.  The awards provide support for programs and projects throughout the eight county region served by the Foundation.  Forty applications with requests exceeding $200,000 were reviewed by the Grants Committee.

Grants benefiting multiple counties include:  $600 to Central WV Pregnancy Care for child care equipment (funding provided by the Billie Armstrong Fund); $2,000 to the Foundation of Mon General for the Tucker County Regional Health Fair (Warken Fund); $1,000 to Young Life program for their 2014 summer camp (TCF unrestricted funds); and $2,000 Tucker County LEPC for TACTICs (all-hazard) training (TCF unrestricted funds).

TCF unrestricted funds are providing $2,000 for Catholic Charities of WV for the Randolph County Wellness Works Food Pantry; $2,000 for Linwood Alive (aka Linwood Community Daycare), serving Randolph and Pocahontas County, to help erect a multiuse pavilion in the Linwood Community; $2,900 to the Tucker County High School Science Dept. for labs; $5,550 for the St. George Community Park restoration project; and $3,000 to the St. George Academy Preservation Society for a roofing replacement project.

Income from the following endowed funds, supplemented with unrestricted funds, provided the following grant awards:  $3,200 for Davis Thomas Elementary for a Right Start Math program (Dehari Fund);  $3,750 for the Cortland Foundation to revitalize the dining room at Cortland Acres (George & Mariwyn Smith Fund, Cortland Acres Fund); $4,400 to Hambleton United Methodist Church for the Light on the Hill Feeding Center (Warken Fund); and $4,800 for a Canaan Valley Fire Dept. generator project (Jordan Fund, Donaldson-Corey Fund).

Grants funded entirely by endowed funds include:  $5,000 to Blackwater Ministerial Association for the Blackwater Food Pantry (Louise & Jim Cooper, Jr. Family Fund, Thompson Family Fund, Warken Fund); $4,500 to First United Methodist Church of Parsons for the Helping Hands food pantry (Warken Fund); $1,900 to Alpine Heritage Preservation for the ArtSpring program (Carl DelSignore Fund); $3,000 to Tucker County 4-H Leaders for 4-H camp (Falling Green Fund); $5,000 to Tucker County Junior Equestrian Program for educational activities (Falling Green Fund); $1,500 to Five Rivers Public Library for a patron bike rack and genealogy database (Louise Harman Fund); $4,000 to Tucker County Family Resource Network for the Backpack Buddies program (Warken Fund); $2,350 to the Twenty-Ten Corporation for the Knights of Columbus Little League field in Thomas (Sarah Thompson Kaemmerling Fund, Rubenstein/Schilansky Fund); $5,000 to New Historic Thomas for the Thomas Riverfront Park Phase II Environmental Site Assessment  (Sarah Thompson Kaemmerling Fund); $5,000 to North Central WV Community Action for Tucker County Emergency Funds for Families program (Warken Fund); $3,500 to Parsons Ministerial Association for families in need (Woody Nestor Fund, Warken Fund); and $300 to the Tucker County High School band (John P. & Sarah Catherine Swartz Fund).

Designated funds provided $300 to Harman EMS (James D. Jordan Fund); $350 to Tucker County EMS (Capt. Karl Patrik Youngblood Memorial Fund); and $500 to Tucker County High School for ski activities (P. J. Zickefoose Fund).

Fall grant applications are available online at www.tuckerfoundation.net after August 1 and must be submitted to the Foundation office by the 3rd Friday in September.  Fall-grants are intended for projects needing $500 or more.

Tucker Community Foundation manages more than 85 endowed funds established by donors to   provide a permanent source of funding for local causes.  For more information on how to endow a fund call 304.478-2930 or 304-259-5008.
