The Friends of Cortland Acres celebrated their annual Volunteer Banquet with a theme of “Volunteers Save the Day,” certainly true for Cortland Acres as our success depends on the countless hours they spend helping implement programs.

The special evening began with a welcome and special reading of the Cortland volunteer poem by “Underdog” or Cindy Helmick, before the memorial candle lighting in member of John Hedrick, Lucy Quattro, Richard Wolfe I, Solena Massi and Martha Nichols.

Betty Bonner, the resident council secretary, gave the blessing before the Dietary Department served a meal that included baked steak, mashed potatoes, tossed salad, rolls and dessert.

Holly Ash entertained the attendees, then Administrator Beth Clevenger expressed appreciation for the work of the volunteers and Activities Director Marie Grafton recognized the officers.

Sgt. Kevin Keplinger of the West Virginia State Police served as the speaker for the evening, before awards were handed out to a number of dedicated volunteers. Honorees included:

Walter Arnold, rookie of the year; Pineview residents, outstanding group; James Snyder, ministry recognition.

The 2014 Outstanding Volunteer Award was presented to Joy Showalter, joining a distinguished list that goes back to the group’s founding in 1985.

Resident Council President Champ Sedmock and Vice President Danny Ringer drew door prize winners before Sandy Kisamore closed the evening with the benediction.
