ELKINS, W.VA. – Seniors today are striving to live longer and looking for ways to spend those extra years enjoying better health. Davis Medical Center is helping seniors achieve that goal by sponsoring a Senior Health Day on Thursday, June 6 at the Davis Medical Outpatient Center, offering not only free screenings, but the opportunity to learn about key issues targeted specifically to senior health.
“The Senior Health Day at DMC will have a host of information, education, and screening geared toward those community members currently enjoying their golden years,” said Catherine Chua, DMC Chief Medical Officer. “We will be offering FIT colon cancer screening for free to the first 50 patrons, free cholesterol screening and hemoglobin a1c testing for diabetes. We will also be offering IRIS diabetic retinal screening for a dramatically discounted price of $45.”
Chua said members of the Davis Foundation will be there to discuss ongoing fundraising opportunities as well as to educate the public on the foundation offerings such as the Davis House and the patient assistance fund. “Case management will be present to help community members navigate the process of understanding and filling out advance directives. These plus other opportunities to learn, free goodies, and an opportunity to get out and commune with fellow seniors are all advantages of coming out to the DMC Senior Health Day.”
The event is scheduled from 7 to 10 a.m. and offers free health screenings including:
- Total cholesterol checks
- Dementia screenings and simulation
- Body mass index (an indicator of obesity and underweight)
- Blood pressure
- Diabetic screening/glucose check
- Mini-omni bone density scan
Representatives from Mountain State Dermatology will be performing skin checks, DMC Cardiopulmonary will be doing sleep apnea screening and FENO testing, Heritage Hearing Center will offer free hearing screens, and WVU HVI Advanced Heart Failure Physicians will attend.
DMC Clinic providers will be available to provide Wellness Visits for Medicare Part B beneficiaries. This comprehensive annual screening is designed for seniors, helping prevent disease and disability based on their current health and risk factors.
In addition, Broaddus Hospital representatives will be on hand to share information on their Speech therapy cognitive screenings, their swing bed care, and the Total Therapy Center, which offers both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.
The event is free and open to the public. Better health giveaways, door prizes, and light refreshments will be offered.
