On Saturday, August 12th, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, authors Stephen Schimpff and David Miller will lead a free outdoor history tour, telling stories of Tucker County from their new book, “Fortune Seekers in the Promised Land”.

The book traces the history of the Canaan Valley and Blackwater Canyon, from the arrival of early settlers through the days of timber towns and clear-cutting, and on to the area’s current recovery.

The tour will begin at the Blackwater Falls Lodge in Blackwater Falls State Park, to allow for a brief orientation and car-pooling. Attendees will learn about the history of early settlement and life in logging communities, while visiting scenic locations like Lindy Point and the banks of the Blackwater River. The tour will end in the town of Davis. Children and bikes are welcome.

This event was made possible in part by the generous support of the West Virginia Humanities Council.
