DAVIS, W. Va., August 16, 2016 – Fall foliage season will be here before we know it, and West Virginia’s 28th Annual Leaf Peepers Festival in Tucker County promises plenty of opportunities to take advantage of peak season.
A centrally located and affordable home base for viewing fall color is Canaan Valley Resort State Park, located in the 15-mile-long valley in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains.
“I live and work in one of the most beautiful valleys I’ve ever seen, so it’s hard to believe the splendor of the valley can be improved upon,” said Steve Drumheller, general manager of the Canaan Valley Resort. “But every fall, the valley becomes even more stunning as a mixture of red, yellow and orange emerges as the leaves change. We are so proud to support this festival by hosting events and guests. It’s one of our favorite weekends of the year.”
The festival celebrates the region’s stunning fall foliage Sept. 23-25 with an array of activities including the Fireman’s Parade Friday evening, inflatable rides all weekend, Food & Craft Fair Saturday and Sunday, 5k/2k Run/Walk on Saturday, Oktoberfest, live music on Saturday, car show, golf tournament, fun run, photo contest, pet show, duck race and Appalachian food and craft fair. Events are staged at Canaan Valley Resort, the nearby towns of Thomas and Davis and other locations throughout Tucker County.
With around 80 percent of the state covered in more than 50 species of trees, West Virginia is colored yellow, red, brown and more. Native trees include ash, birch, hickory, walnut, willow, dogwood, oak, maple, persimmon and sassafras, among others. The traditional peak viewing season for Canaan Valley and the surrounding mountains is late September through the second week of October.
