The Mountaineer Garden Club had the pleasure of listening to Master Gardener and TVEMS teacher, Christine Poling Ward’s informative talk regarding the high tunnel provided by a grant and supported by the involvement of the community at TVEMS in Parsons.
High tunnels, or hoop houses, are unheated greenhouses that can help extend the growing season and improve the profitability and productivity of food production. High tunnels are also an integral part of local food production systems in many parts of the United States. The third and fourth graders are learning by participating in planting and care of the plants.
The goal of Ward is that each child will have a plant to take home at the end of the school year. Also, Ward is developing plans for a grant to develop a nature walk at TVEMS, which will include forest, wet lands, and bee and butterfly habitat.
The Garden Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at Fiver Rivers Library. New members are welcome.
