At the April 22 Parsons City Council Meeting, Mayor Judy signed a proclamation declaring May 15 Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and the week of May 12 – May 16, 2014 as National Police Week.
This event was first signed into public law in 1962, by Presiden John F. Kennedy. President Clinton amended the law in 1994, directing all Flags of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15 each year to honor the fallen.
There are more than 836,787 sworn Law Enforcement Officers serving and protecting in the United States and they are called to investigate a crime committed on average every two seconds. In 2013, 105 Officers gave the ultimate sacrifice. So far in 2014, 13 Officers have been killed. On average, a Law Enforcement Officer is killed every 58 hours.
We honor these Officers every day, but during this week in May, our local Fraternal Order of Police, Seneca Trail Lodge #104, is asking everyone to tie a blue ribbon on the antenna of your vehicle to show your respect and support.
