Directors of the Highlands Trail Foundation welcomed new board members April Miller and Gary Berti at their May 25th meeting held that was held at Canaan Valley Resort.

Miller was born and raised in Tucker County. She is Executive Director of the Tucker County Family Resource Network (TCFRN), a non-profit agency that provides a wide range of family and community centered programming focused on education, support and resource coordination for local children and their families.

Since 2011 she has served as Recorder for the Hendricks Town Council. “I have a particular affinity for the area in which I live, specifically Dry Fork, Otter Creek and the Blackwater Canyon rail trail from Thomas to Parsons. There is hardly a day that I am not walking on at least a section of these trails. The benefits of these resources are immense and it is my hope that more local people see the importance of protecting and expanding the trail system in the region.”

April and her husband have two children and one granddaughter.

Berti moved to Davis in 1986 to enjoy WV’s amazing rivers and streams. He became involved in civic volunteerism with an appointment to Tucker County’s charter Solid Waste Authority, and by serving on the Davis Town Council.

He has been involved with initiating several Non-Profit organizations including the Friends of the 500th (Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge) and Tucker County Trails. He was Canaan Valley Institute’s first full time staff person, a former owner of Blackwater Bikes, and recently retired from Trout Unlimited after 15 years. He has 27 years of Ski Patrol experience in the XC ski industry.

Gary lives between Montrose and Davis with his wife, Barbara and a variety of pets. Hobbies include fishing, biking, paddling, skiing, diving and travel to points remote.

In other business, race director and HTF board member Sarah Forbes gave an update on plans for the 2021 HTF Blackwater Canyon Half Marathon. The race is scheduled for Saturday, September 11. Racers can register online at https://runsignup.com/Race/WV/Parsons/BlackwaterCanyonHalfMarathon.

Highlands Trail Foundation has operated as an all-volunteer 501c3 organization since 1995. Our mission is to create, support, and advance the Allegheny Highlands Trail (AHT) in the Potomac Highlands Region of WV. The trail currently runs from Elkins to Hendricks with potential to extend to Thomas, Davis and Mt. Storm.
