Terry Nelson of Thomas, WV has grown the new State of West Virginia record giant pumpkin. Nelsons’ pumpkin weighed 1,686 lbs. It was officially weighed at the Barnesville, Ohio pumpkin weigh off on Friday, September 25, 2020. The pumpkin beats the former record of 1,583.5 lbs by Robert Cyrus of Fort Gay, WV set in 2018. Nelson won fourth place at the Barnesville event.
The pumpkin was grown from an Atlantic giant pumpkin seed in a 30’ x 30’ patch in the City of Thomas. To grow giants, it takes dedication, commitment and time to accomplish this feat. Nelson spent hours daily burying vines, watering, fertilizing and pruning unnecessary vines.
The pumpkin can be seen in Nelson’s yard in Thomas until the end of October.
