The Parsons City Council recently helped Title 1 support literacy development for Tucker Valley students by offering a day of fun and cool treats for students who participated in Tucker Valley’s Summer Soaker Reading Event. Mayor Judy, City Administrator Jason Myers, and his staff were eager to help out and went above and beyond our expectations by offering such wonderful incentives to our readers. They opened the new Parsons Water Park for the day and students enjoyed a day of sunshine, ice-cream, and drinks as acknowledgement for their reading efforts. Title 1 teachers, Michele Felton and Tracy Harlan conclude: “When we are able to offer these types of events it makes students want to participate and read more. Research has shown that typically students lose up to three months growth while off during the summer. This can have a cumulative long term effect on student learning. We are working hard to prevent this.” We had a lot of new readers this year and are happy to report our summer readers included:
