The first annual Sporting Clay Shoot-out competition was held at Canaan Valley Resort State Park on Saturday, August 31, over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The shoot-out had 10 competitors to test their skills on the five stand sporting clay course. Anthony Schrock was the overall winner of the day shooting 23 or 25 clays in his final attempt. There was a shoot-off for second place resulting in Dale Paugh earning second place, and third place awarded to Larry Beard.
The park has had great success with the newest addition to its many summer activities since the opening of the sporting clay target field this past Memorial weekend. The sport is open to men, women and children (ages 12 and older).
A safety lesson is included prior to each round on handling and shooting of the gun. One round include 25 shots (five at each station).
