The annual St. George Days Festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25. This is the time of year when the community gets to together to remember the local history.
St. George was settled in 1776. It was first settled by John Minear and 40 other people who came with him from Moorefield. The town was first called Fort Minear for several years, and later named Westernford. When Tucker County was formed in 1856, it was renamed St. George.
The town had a courthouse, newspapers, hotels, lawyer’s offices and many other businesses, as well as Anna Eliza Church which was built around 1844 by Soloman Parsons and Enoch Minear. It was built on Minear Mill Run. This church is known as the United Methodist Church. It still stands as a reminder of early religion in our town. It is well maintained and services are held every Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
The St. George Days Committee was originally started to raise funds to support the churches. This has been its goal over the years. The town of St. George will host it again this year for a Homecoming.
There will be a lot of good food to sale, which keeps folks coming back, hotdogs, baked goods, side dishes, drinks and a variety of other good foods, along with a silent auction. All of the events start at 10 a.m. There are yard sales all over town set up by anyone who wants to take advantage of the day. Also, there is a free yard sale at the church.
The town and church history display will be set up at the church for all to look at and a cakewalk at 6 p.m. All proceeds go to United Methodist Women missions.
The St. George Academy was built in 1886 and was used as a school of higher education for eight years. It was sold to the County Board of Education and served the community for several years as a graded school. The building will be open for people to check out old and new donations. The Academy Board is working on a project to replace the roof. The Board is working on grants to help with funding. They are accepting donations and having yard sales to meet their goal. This building is part of St. George heritage.
On Sunday, June 25 there will be regularly scheduled church service at 10 a.m. with Sunday school to follow. The Homecoming meal starts at 1 p.m. and everyone is welcome to bring a covered dish and join in. After the meal there will be singing at 2 p.m. and all singers are welcome.
