The St. John’s United Methodist Women held their annual Mother/Daughter Banquet recently President Donna Cross began the covered-dish celebration with a brief greeting and Lacey Evan’s offered the opening prayer.
Following the dinner, Tracey Dent presented the program entitled, “What Kind of a Cup are You?” The focus scripture was Hebrews 13:20-21, “Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in you what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” She challenged the ladies to examine their Christian walk and see if the “cup of their life” was chipped or whole, dirty or clean, decorative or practical, seasonal or every-day, empty or full.
Shelby Kisner presented the Memorial Service honoring those lost since Mother’s Day of 2016. She shared a reading entitled “The Heaven File,” and candles were lit for: Eva Lee Bohon Slavin Carter – July 4, 2016, and Louella Jewell Fike McElrath – April 7, 2017.
Following the memorial service, president Donna Cross presented the “2017 Mother of the Year Award” to: Anita Helmick, mother of preschooler Lily and one year old twins Ellie & Clay. Nola Devilder awarded Ruth Alkire with the “Special Mission Recognition” pin, honoring her work within the church and especially with the church’s college-box ministry which she organizes. Nola then recognized the following former “Mothers of the Year,” presenting those in attendance with a red geranium: Geraldine Hevener, Shelby Kisner, Patty Wilfong – 1997, and Leana Johnson, Marijane Martin, Beula Burns – 2007. She also presented geraniums to Linda Hockman, Tracey Dent and surprise guest Donna Morrison. At that time, Nola awarded door prizes to several individuals.
