Five Rivers Public Library’s summer reading program was July 11, 18 and 25. This year’s theme was “Libraries Rock”. Books were read to the children weekly and this year it was all about music and musical instruments.

Children attending: Rhys, Gage and Quinn Hovatter, Maddy Helmick, Shilah and Joel Jones, Emma and David Rogers, Shay Wolfe, Lathius and Xzavier Asbury. Volunteer helpers were Matt Johnson, Macy Helmick, Tabitha Adams, Jayden Moore and Abby Wilfong. Not pictured are Lathius and Xzavier Asbury

The crafts, games, snacks & activities were geared towards the theme of the Summer Reading Program. Kids created musical instruments, sang karaoke and made different sounds with the instruments they made. Dennis Filler Board President brought in several musical instruments and played for the kids and explained how each of them worked.

All children received goodie bags, with the top three readers receiving a special tote filled with a variety of items. Our top three readers were, Rhys and Gage Hovatter and Maddy Helmick.

For the final week there was an ice cream station set up for kids to make their own ice cream sundaes. Throughout the three weeks the kids were given a variety of snacks to choose from which also coordinated with the theme each week. Of the reading lists that were turned in, 254 books were read for the three weeks of the program. To encourage the kids to read, there were several businesses who contributed certificates to the reading program. McDonalds, C.J.’s Pizzeria, The Dugout, Parsons Pizza and Sheetz. The kids had a great time as did the volunteers and library staff!
