This year for the Five Rivers Public Library’s Summer Reading Program was a new experience for us. Since we had to work around the Covid-19 virus we had to make some serious changes on how to make the program work for the kids their parents and or guardians. Our staff, Angie and Lynnette worked hard to set up for the Summer Reading Program. They chose books that related to the theme of the program, along with books, they created an activities packet with crafts, activity and coloring sheets, games and snacks which was placed in a bag to be picked up at the library each week. The kids were given a reading log at the beginning of the 6-week program, which was to be turned in the end of July. This year’s theme was “Imagine Your Story”.
Each week during the 6-week period there were various pre-recorded videos of books being read through Facebook. All staff participated in reading books associated with the theme of the program.
All children received goodie bags, with the top three readers receiving a special tote filled with a variety of items. Our top three readers were, Ryleigh Blue, Gage and Quinn Hovatter.
Of the reading lists that were turned in, 1,135 books were read for the 6 weeks of the program. To help encourage the kids to read, McDonalds in Parsons donated coupons for a free kid’s meal. We appreciate McDonalds for their support! We also appreciate all the parents, grandparents, etc. who helped the children with the virtual program! We had 23 kids participate this year.
