Alex Cork, TCHS Principal, Laurie Godfrey, TCHS Guidance Counselor, and The Tucker County Chamber of Commerce organized a career day. There were twenty four booths set up. Students could go from booth to booth gathering information for jobs and colleges. This is the first Career Day that has been hosted at TCHS in several years.They do plan to have another one in the spring. If you are interested in attending you may call TCHS and speak with Laurie Godfrey.
One thing all these businesses have in common is lack of employees. Some of these jobs you can start at fourteen-years-old. Mike Goss, Sirianni’s Pizza Cafe, “Who isn’t recruiting for employees right now?”
Canaan Valley Resort offers jobs of all sorts, from full to part time, and even seasonal jobs. They offer benefits as well.
Cassidy Norman, Cathedral State Park, was recruiting for positions at Cathedral State Park as well as Blackwater Falls State Park.
Lois Nelson, Cortland Acres, “We have full time, part time, and temporary positions available.”
Chad Ware, Davis Medical Center, “We offer a program for graduating seniors where they can work six rotations in different departments to figure out where they like it best.”
Sergeant McFarland with the WV Division of Corrections and Rehab, stated they offer benefits as well as train you. They also have positions open for counselors.
Tammy Sandy with BCF-OCFP attended to inform students that if they receive SNAP benefits then they can help with the funding for college.
Timberline Ski Resort has positions open. When working for them you get to do their winter activities for free.
The Navy, Marines, and Army also sent recruiters. That is where most of the student body spent their time.
Other businesses that attended include Highland Market, FBI, Friends at Blackwater, and Randolph WROC.
There were college admission representatives from Fairmont State University, Alderson Broaddus College, Eastern WV Community and Technical College, Shepherd University, Davis & Elkins College, and Potomac State College.
The students in each grade had a forty-five minute slot where they could roam the gymnasium and gather all the information they needed for jobs and college.
