Mark your calendars and get on board. The Tucker County Historical Society is sponsoring a reception and program to introduce our new Model Train Exhibit which is now up and running at the Depot. The date is Sunday afternoon, September 28, 2025 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Parsons Depot.
Plan on spending a pleasant afternoon enjoying the exhibit and listening to some really good music and story telling presented by our own local troubadour, Doug Spears. Doug graciously accepted the Historical Society’s invitation to entertain our guests and describes himself as “a veteran performing songwriter with a storyteller’s soul”. Although Doug is a Floridian, he and his family spend the warmer months on the banks of the Cheat River in Tucker County. He has earned recognition for his songwriting from many sources including the International Acoustic Music Awards. The Savannah Folk Music Society says, “Great songs combined with fine guitar playing and entertaining, informative patter make Doug a sure-fire success with any audience.” Doug has consented to include a couple train songs in his presentation and perhaps an audience sing-a-long.
After the performance, plan on staying around to enjoy refreshments and visiting with one another.
The model train set was originally owned by John Bush, owner of Piccolo Paula’s. You may have seen it running around the tracks in restaurants John previously owned. Several months ago, John donated the entire set to the Historical Society to be displayed as an attraction at the Depot. Mark Warner reassembled the entire set at the Depot with skill and effort, and even some danger from working atop a very high ladder. The train runs on tracks located overhead and around the perimeter of the room. It passes by a village and over a large railroad bridge. Mark will be on hand to answer questions about what it took to put it up.
The Tucker County Historical Society is pleased to sponsor gatherings such as this one for the public’s enjoyment and education. We are open to suggestions from those of you who think you have a good program idea and invite you to bring it to our attention.
