CHARLESTON, W.Va. — As excitement builds for fall hunting in West Virginia, the Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) is reminding anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1975, that completing a hunter education course is a legal requirement before buying a hunting license.

“Hunter education is the foundation of safe and responsible hunting,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “Our program is designed to give new hunters the knowledge and confidence they need to enjoy West Virginia’s traditions while prioritizing safety and conservation.”

The free, two-day course includes 10 hours of instruction on firearm safety, wildlife management, ethics, survival skills, first aid, game identification and other essentials. After completing the class, students must pass a written exam and demonstrate safe firearm handling during a hands-on practical under the supervision of a Natural Resources Police officer or certified volunteer instructor.

“Taking this class is the first step toward becoming part of West Virginia’s proud hunting tradition,” said Natural Resources Police Colonel Bobby Cales. “We emphasize the rules and regulations of our state, but also the responsibility that comes with carrying a firearm and being in the woods.”

Even if a hunter already meets West Virginia’s requirements, completing hunter education is strongly recommended for those planning to hunt in another state that requires proof of hunter education before issuing a license.
