The Tucker County Board of Education met in regular session last week. The Board President called the meeting to order with all members present. Following the Pledge of Allegiance the Board moved on to delegations.
Having no delegations, the Board approved three agenda adjustments for later in the meeting.
Following a minor correction to the minutes, the Board passed the minutes of the last meeting.
The Board approved payroll check registers for the total of $216,938.88 and the account payable check register for the amount of $32,902.96.
The Board approved the following job shadow sites:
Timber and Watershed Lab- Parsons, WV
Newlon’s- Elkins, WV
Cortland Acres Rehab & Therapy- Thomas, WV
Tucker Valley EMS- Hambleton, WV
Garrett Physical Therapy- Oakland, MD
Savage Industries- Oakland, MD
The Board was notified of intent to homeschool by Connie Harvey for her daughter Faith Ann Harvey.
The Board approved Mike Betler as volunteer assistant coach for the TVEMS middle school girls basketball team.
The Board reviewed both the Transportation and Financial reports which had been approved by Superintendent Campbell.
Moving on to Committee Reports, M. Parsons reported Leann George resigned as 4-H Program Assistant.
J. DiBacco (Safety Committee) commended Superintendent Campbell and Principal Hamrick for their actions taken during the High School’s recent bomb threats.
T. Turner congratulated Amber Kyle and Cheerleaders for placing first place in local competition and 3rd in regional’s (noting that just a few points separated them from second place).
M. Parsons thanked all of Tucker County’s football coaches.
Dr. Campbell mention the three town-hall style meetings the Board would be hosting that week with Kelly Stadelman acting as moderator.
The Board moved on to Delegations pertaining to non-agenda items. Having none, they continued on to personnel matters.
The Board approved the recommendation of Joshua Evans as Teacher of Mathematics , grades 5-8 (half-time position) for DTEMS, effective January 2, 2014 pending certification and CIB check.
The Board approved the retirement of Eda (Edie)McDowell, kindergarten teacher at DTEMS effective August 1, 2014. Dr. Campbell said that many students will miss her dearly.
J. Preston said: ” You could hardly have a better introduction to school than Edie.”
The Board approved the employment of Don Canfield as Custodian III at DTEMS effective December 2, 2013.
The Board approved Pam Hoskins as an approved ticket-taker.
The Board then went in to Executive Session.
Upon returning to regular session the Board recorded that it had accepted with a 5-0 vote the recommendation to expel student X for 365 days.
The Board returned again to Executive Session.
Upon returning to regular session the Board recorded that no action was taken at this time.
The meeting was adjourned.
Next meeting will be Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 at 6 p.m. at the Tucker County Board Office, 100 Education Lane, Parsons, WV.
