As the new board and superintendent work their way into their positions, meeting procedures and school system functions were hashed out and discussed.

Policy formation was discussed.  One policy in particular that outlines communication between school personnel and the board was discussed at length.  The proposed policy directly affects the level of transparency between the two entities.  The board tabled any action on the policy until the next meeting.

Procedures for interviews, specifically exit interviews, were also discussed.  “What information are we looking for?  What do we feel like would be important information from someone leaving the system?” Board President Tim Turner asked.

“I think it’s important to us to tap into that, those interviews,” Board Member Cathy Hebb said.

Neal McDermott resigned as the carpentry instructor at the high school.  Nathaniel Goldstein was hired as a half time specials teacher at Davis Thomas and a substitute teacher.

Laura Olsen was hired as a custodian at Davis Thomas. Joshua Michael resigned from his position as Tucker Valley’s assistant football coach.

The 2018 Transportation and AESOP reports were released.  Five students transferred into the county, and one transferred out.  Two intent to homeschool notifications were acknowledged.

The board approved Highlands Trail Foundation’s request for use of a school bus for their half marathon.

The bid by United Dairy, Inc. as the school system’s milk distributor was approved.  M.F. Mansuetto and Sons, Inc. was approved as the roofing contractor for the Davis Thomas roof project.  Bear Contracting was approved as the site drainage contractor at Davis Thomas.

A Memorandum of Agreement was approved between Eastern Western Virginia Community and Technical College and Tucker County Schools.

An additional meeting on July 18 at 4:30 p.m. was scheduled as a work session to set goals.  “We have to get the goal setting completed for ourselves as well as the superintendent before September 15,” Turner said. The meeting will be held at the Board of Education Office.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office.
