Parsons City Council approves a preliminary budget of expenditures and revenues Tuesday during their regular meeting.
PARSONS – Parsons City Council approved a preliminary balanced budget of $713,661 Tuesday during their regular meeting.

Projected expenditures include $195,346 for General Government Expenditures; $71,000 for Public Safety Expenditures; 185,000 for Street and Transportation Expenditures; $0 for Health and Sanitation Expenditures; $47,650 for Culture and Recreation Expenditures; $3,000 for Social Services Expenditures; and $211,665 for Capital Projects Expenditures.

“Coal severance tax is going to take a huge drop because Metikki Coal is mining under Grant County,” said Parsons City Administrator/Treasurer Jason Myers. “The law changed and it doesn’t matter where the coal comes out, but is paid to where the mining is taking place.”

Parsons City Council members met in executive session to consider a proposed restructuring plan and matters dealing with personnel recommendation by the Parsons Parks and Recreation Commission. No decisions on the matter were made while in session.

Myers told Council he received the FEMA cost estimate for the City of Parsons Flood Wall Repair. The total cost of the project is estimated at $807,500 to repair the dike. The cost estimate is just a repair of the visual damage that FEMA witnessed on March 19. To complete the repairs and improve the Pulp Mill Bottom Flood Wall/Dike is estimated at $3.1 million.

The next Parsons City Council is set for 6 p.m. April 7 in the Council Chambers.
