PARSONS – Tucker County Veterans are working toward building a Veterans Monument in Davis, and two representatives of that group, Charles Showalter and Fred Myers requested funding assistance from the Tucker County Commission Wednesday. Commissioners voted to reimburse $1,600 toward the purchase of two benches for the new memorial.
Showalter and Myers said the project will include a monument, two benches and flags. They said the total cost of the project is $14,800, and they hope the project will be completed by Memorial Day. They said they have $5,230 so far, and are looking for more donations to finish. Donations for the memorial should be sent to Fred Myers, P.O. Box 53, Davis, W.Va. 26260.
Rob Burns, Executive Director of the Tucker Community Foundation, said two reasons brought him to Wednesday’s Commission meeting.
“The Tucker County Planning Commission wants to give our annual report to you,” Burns said. “The report details our activities and the progress on our comprehensive plan.”
Burns said the Tucker County Planning Commission is short one member and looking for a volunteer.
Burns also asked Commission Members for a donation for the Run for It event. Commissioner Diane Hinkle recused herself from the presentation since she works for the Tucker Community Foundation.
“I think you are fairly familiar with the event,” Burns said. “As you can see, last year we had more than 1,100 people who participated in the event and we gave away more than $170,000. Over the lifetime of the event, we have given away more than $700,000 and your $5,000 really helps us leverage that money and make it grow over the year.”
Burns said he would appreciate the Commission making the $5,000 donation again in 2015. “We will definitely support you,” Tucker County Commission President Lowell Moore said. “This is a win-win for anyone who participates. I don’t see how you can lose.”
Nancy Moore of the Five Rivers Library in Parsons and Ivonne Martinez of the Mountaintop Public Library in Thomas updated Commissioners about their 2014 activities. Both Libraries receive support from the Tucker County Commission, and each asked for the Commission to continue funding in their upcoming budget.
“The Commission wants to thank Nancy and Ivonne for your help,” Moore said. “We want to thank your supporters, your Boards and your staff. Thanks so much for a job well done.”
In other business, Commissioners voted to appoint Nick Carr to the Tucker County Historical Landmark Commission.
The next Tucker County Commission meeting is slated for 4 p.m. March 25 in the Tucker County Courthouse Courtroom.
