Two concerns were expressed to the Tucker County Board of Education during the October 1 meeting.

During the citizen’s input portion of the meeting, Tiffany Fowler expressed concern over the current policy that allows students with head lice to be able to attend school.

The current guideline allows children with head lice to continuing attending school.  The Fowler stated her children were treated for lice four separate times last school year costing her $1,000 and time away from work.

She advocated for a head lice policy in Tucker County.

Before the citizen’s input portion of the meeting, President Tim Turner reminded all that the citizen’s input is restricted to five minutes per point, and the board must refrain from comment because items brought up are not to be voted on.

The high school student council alerted the board to an increase in the use JUUL pods or similar brands of vaporizers in school.  The student council suggested employing a resource officer or police officer to patrol the school.

The student council presented their initiatives to improve attendance to the board.  The council suggested taking away events and privileges such as prom and driving from students with more than 10 absences.

The board approved a one day field trip for high school art and social studies students to Washington D.C. on either October 15, 16, 17, 18, or 19.  The date is dependent on bus availability.  The high school cross country team will travel to Williamsburg, Virginia.

West Virginia University and Tucker County Extension Service will use a county bus and driver to transport 4-H students and counselors to Potomac State College on October 6.

The Tucker County Sheriff Department, Garrett Regional Medical Center, and the City of Parsons were added as senior job shadow sites.

Kimberly Welsh was hired as a math teacher at Tucker Valley.  Karen Linton was hired as a homebound instructor. Shane Eakle, Jeff Helmick, and Jannette Michael were all hired as mentor teachers that will guide new teachers.

The next Tucker County Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, October 15, at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School at 4:30
