Elkins, WV – Davis Medical Center (DMC) welcomes Elkins native Carrie R. Johnson, PA-C, who recently joined the practice of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Walter Boardwine.
Johnson is an Elkins High School graduate who went on to complete a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Alderson-Broaddus University in 2015. She holds a Bachelor of Science from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Johnson is glad for the opportunity to practice in her hometown, and credits Elkins High teacher Greg Hott with inspiring her to study medicine. “During Mr. Hott’s human anatomy class I became very interested in the human body. I believe that is what sparked my desire to become a physician assistant and my preference for orthopedics,” she said.
While in the Physician Assistant Studies program, Johnson completed a number of clinical clerkships including Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Women’s Health and Surgery. However, her clerkship in orthopedics led her to seek additional training through an orthopedic elective at United Hospital Center (UHC) where she worked under Dr. Christopher Courtney and Justin Brewer PA-C.
“At UHC I developed an interest in lower extremity medicine including hip and knee pain,” said Johnson. “I like the sports medicine specialty as well, and think that working with Dr. Boardwine will provide me the opportunity to care for and help many people. He’s an outstanding surgeon who is focused on great patient care and outcomes.”
Prior to joining DMC, Johnson was employed at West Virginia University Hospital as a Surgical and Inpatient Consult PA. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and earned the Presidential Scholarship while at WV Wesleyan College.
Dr. Boardwine’s office is located on the first floor of the Davis Medical Center Outpatient Center in Elkins. For more information or an appointment, please call 304.637.9302.
